Electric Vehicle Charging on Hatteras Island, NC

Hatteras Island is a popular destination for travelers from all over the world. With its beautiful beaches, stunning scenery, and abundance of activities, it's no wonder that so many people choose to visit this beautiful part of North Carolina.

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in electric vehicles (EVs). EVs are becoming more affordable and efficient, and they offer a number of benefits over traditional gasoline-powered vehicles. For example, EVs produce zero emissions, which can help to improve air quality. They are also much quieter than gasoline-powered vehicles, which can make them a more pleasant driving experience.

If you are considering bringing your EV to Hatteras Island, you'll be happy to know that there are a number of charging stations available on the island. There are both public and private charging stations available, so you should be able to find one that is convenient for you.

Public EV Charging Stations

Avon Pier

There is one CHAdeMO DC Fast Charger (62.5kW) and one CCS/SAE charger (62kW) available at the Avon Pier parking lot. The DC Fast Charger can charge an EV in about 30 minutes. These chargers are owned and operated by Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative (CHEC).  The cost of charging at this station is $0.27 per kWh.

Buxton Woods Trailhead

In June 2023, a new Level 2 charger has been installed across from the Caper Hatteras Lighthouse, near the Buxton Woods trailhead.

Waves Village in Rodanthe

There is one Level 2 charger (J1772) available in the parking lot of Kitty Hawk Kites in Waves Village (6.5kW). This charger is owned and operated by CHEC and costs $0.14 per kWh.

Hatteras Village

There is one Level 2 charger (J1772) available in the parking lot of Hatteras Landing (6.5kW). This charger is owned and operated by CHEC and the cost of charging at this station is $0.14 per kWh.

All CHEC-owned EV charging stations are the ChargePoint brand.

Private EV Charging Stations

In addition to public charging stations, there are also a number of private charging stations available on Hatteras Island. These stations are typically located in hotels, restaurants, and other businesses. To use a private charging station, you will need to have permission from the property owner.

The cost of charging your EV at a private charging station will vary. Some property owners may charge a fee to use their charging station, while others may allow guests charge for free.

The Inn on Pamlico Sound in Buxton

This hotel has two Tesla Destination Chargers available for guests to use for free (13 kW).

Ocracoke

If you are staying on Ocracoke Island, PlugShare has only 1 private 9kW charger as of the writing of this article and it is only for guests of SeaClusion I (2 bedrooms / 2 baths), SeaClusion II (2 bedrooms / 2 baths), or SeaClusion I & II (4 bedrooms / 4 baths) available for rent through Ocracoke Island Realty.  This home offers an Emporia 40A Level 2 charger or a NEMA 14-50 outlet for guests to charge their electric vehicle.
