A Rich History of Service
The roots of Veterans Day stretch back to the end of World War I, when an armistice agreement was signed on the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918. Initially called Armistice Day, the holiday was later renamed Veterans Day in 1954 to honor veterans of all wars. Veterans Week was established in 1978 as a way to expand the focus on veterans and their contributions to society.
Ways to Celebrate Veterans Week
There are countless ways to honor our veterans, whether in your community or from home:
- Attend a Veterans Day Parade or Ceremony: Many communities hold parades, flag-raising ceremonies, and special services to honor veterans. Participating in these events is a meaningful way to show support. To find a Veterans Day event near you, visit the Veterans Affairs Outreach and Events page for a list of celebrations across the country.
- Volunteer Your Time: Many veteran service organizations rely on volunteers. Consider volunteering at a local VA hospital, homeless shelter serving veterans, or a veteran-focused charity.
- Donate to a Veteran Cause: There are numerous organizations dedicated to supporting veterans and their families. Consider making a donation to a cause you care about, such as the Wounded Warrior Project or the Disabled American Veterans.
- Thank a Veteran: Perhaps the simplest, yet most meaningful way to honor veterans is to express your gratitude. If you know a veteran, thank them for their service. Share your appreciation on social media with the hashtag #VeteransWeek.
- Learn More About Veterans: Take some time to learn about the history of Veterans Day and the challenges faced by many veterans today. Websites like the Library of Congress and the Department of Veterans Affairs offer a wealth of information.
